My Family And Friends Never Let Me Stop Fighting Cancer - By Lesli H.

On July 16, 2018, I will climb a mountain in Breckenridge Colorado to raise money for colon cancer. Together we will climb  as a team and our team name is “SUMMERLIN STRENGTH”

The explanation behind our team name is very simple.....

Summerlin is my maiden name (for those of you who don't know), which represents family.

Strength is what family and friends provide to get us through our challenges and difficulties in life.

In April 2015 I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. My diagnosis came as a complete surprise to me and my family; I had no symptoms and had just participated in a half marathon with my eldest daughter, Chelsea. Immediately after learning about my diagnosis, family and friends dropped everything and suddenly became part of my team. I can certainly say that if it weren't for my family and friends I wouldn't have been writing this story and preparing for my upcoming climb.

As said so well by my second daughter, Claudia, climbing a mountain is very similar to fighting a disease; there are many ups and downs along the way, but the goal is to never give up and to reach the summit. This I can say is done by "believing" and accepting the strength and support from the loved ones around you.

My family and I chose this climb on July 16, 2018, for many reasons. We will be celebrating my father's 80th birthday, my sister's 55th birthday, her 10 years cancer free mark, and my accomplishments of where I am today, after 21 rounds of chemo and 4 major surgeries. We will also be celebrating the life of Caroline who battled cancer; the weekend of our climb will be her 12th birthday; she fought hard and always with a beautiful smile on her face. We will be doing all of this together because we are a team, and they never let me quit.

We as a family have combined forces to create this awesome team to celebrate "life" while giving back by raising money for Fight Colorectal Cancer! Many of us have been touched by a silent disease like my family which can be so devastating! We feel the best way to accomplish anything is by forming a team which signifies “team-work” [teem-wurk] noun. Definition of a team is: 1. A cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interest of a common cause. That’s what a family is and that is what helps us through our challenges, struggles, weaknesses and gets us to the other side.
